Trying Out Pea Gravel In My Sandbag

I don’t even try to make it a secret that I just love using the sandbag and doing WODS with it. I find it to be a really versatile addition to our fitness stuff. It doesn’t take up much space and it’s easy to take outside and we plan on taking them to the park sometime.

The one disappointment with the rep fitness one is the filler bags have on several occasions opened up and either made a bit of a mess on the garage door or dust in the face cutting a workout short. Other than that I like it. It’s just that the Velcro doesn’t seem quite as good as the Brute force ones.

I’ve read that you can and a lot of people seem to prefer pea gravel as a filler so we bought some to try it out. It’s been drying in a container for a bit and I finally got around to putting it in my sandbag today. I tried out a few cleans and jerks and push presses and it felt pretty good. I didn’t try a WOD or anything significant with it as I didn’t sleep well or enough last night do to being too hot.

The gravel actually seemed quieter hitting the floor which will be nice. Not that it’s annoyingly loud or anything but I don’t want to be the asshole the disturbs the neighbors too much. If I am feeling a little better tomorrow maybe I’ll give it a shot.

At the very least if the inner filler bag decides to open up it will be a lot less messy than the sand was and should be easier to get it all out of the outer bag back into the inner fillers. I have it set up with 53 pounds now and I think I’ll make the other two fillers 25 pounds or so each. It would be very handy to be able to easily and quickly adjust my sandbag load from 50 to 75 to 100 pounds depending on the movements and how I’m feeling on that particular day.
