Back To Squats And They Felt Great!

Last week, when I was sick, I made the right decision to hold off on my lifts until I felt better. Could I have gotten through my lifts? Probably, but that doesn’t mean it would have been a good idea to do so.

This morning we got out for a nice short walk on the trail. I didn’t wear my jacket because it felt pretty good as long as we were moving, and I was in the sun. The leaves are off the trees, so the sun wasn’t a problem at all. It was a bit breezy and the temperature was only in the fifties, but it felt good enough. It is the middle of January, so it’s not going to get much warmer than this. The fresh air felt great for the body ant the mind. Fresh air is one of the best things for both, and it’s free yet it’s so often not taken advantage of.

We got home and I did some reading on the computer. I went downstairs and saw the sun coming in the back door into the rack and realized it would be on my back. That’s when I decided to get changed and see how my squats went. I had already decided that I was going to ignore my last cycle and restart week one, since it’s ever so slightly less intense. I had also decided that I was going to stick with the minimum reps for this week.

I got changed and headed out into the garage to get shit done. The warm-ups felt pretty good and easy enough. I felt like I was moving really well. I worked my way up through the warm-up sets quickly this afternoon.

The final AMRAP set for today was five plus reps at two hundred and forty-five pounds. These felt great. The weight felt a little heavy on my shoulders today, but they seem to be a bit tender, but besides that, the squats themselves were pretty easy for me today. I didn’t want to, but I stuck with the game plan of doing just the required five reps and left plenty in the tank. It just made sense today.

When I looked at the video of my final working set, I was really surprised at how good they looked. I was getting extra deep today and remaining more upright than I normally do. It’s not that I normally collapse forward like I did years ago. It’s just the way the center of mass usually sets up.

It felt great to get that fresh air and sunshine this morning. It also felt excellent to get under the bar again. Even though It has only been a week, but it seemed like forever. I just enjoy the mental game of me against gravity. I really do miss it on those few rare occasions such as last week when I don’t do it.

Sadly time got away and I wound up skipping a WOD but that’s okay. I did double up yesterday.

Music for my lifting was Illogicist.
