Got 8 Squats At 250 Pounds This Morning

This morning started out on a great note when I slept long and well overnight. I woke up about 4:00 AM and took my thyroid pill. I decided to lay back down for a while and see if I could go back to sleep. Surprisingly, I was able to fall asleep and woke up a little after 6:00 AM this morning. That’s late for me!

When I did wake up, the coffee was good. I also noticed that my knee wasn’t sore when I first got out of bed. The other day I stepped wrong on the single step in our house before turning to go up the rest of the steps and rolled my ankle and twisted my knee a bit. Originally, it was my ankle that was hurting, but then it migrated to my knee. This morning my ankle felt great and me knee felt good too. No more weakness going down the stairs. Not that it was bad the past few days, but it was there enough to make me aware of it.

I drank my coffee and enjoyed it very much while I browsed the web a bit this morning. I was eager to get out into the garage and do my squats. As a bonus, I knew it would be easier being the first week of a new cycle, and even more so because I was lowering my training max a bit. While I made the two reps at three hundred pounds last week for a lifetime PR, my for did break on that second rep. That’s when I knew I had to back off a bit. It’s about long-term gains, not daily PRs.

It was around 9:00 AM or so when I finally got under the bar to begin my warm-up. I felt like I was moving well and my foot and ankle were fine. As I moved up in weight, I felt like I was moving better as always. To a point when the weight is too light for me, it’s a slightly different balance. I took my time working up through the sets and paying close attention to my knee to listen to my body. Other than it being a little noisier than usual, it was fine.

My AMRAP set was bock down to two hundred and fifty pounds for five plus reps. The squats on this set felt great! I can admit that it felt a little heavier than it should have for this weight, but not overwhelmingly so. I wound up making eight good reps and then felt a slight twinge in my knee on that last squat. When I felt that, I stopped there as I had planned, but I know I left some more in the tank. This was one more squat at this weight than I did last time, so that was a nice surprise. I was mentally prepared to do worse given my circumstances, but I did better! Any day I do better than I’m prepared to do is a great day in my books.

Music today was Queens Of The Stone Age.
