This Rainy Night Is Reminding Me Of Hearing Day Boat Horns

Today has been one of those rainy and foggy winter days that I remember getting oh so too many of growing up. I wanted snow in the worst way, but being on the warm side of the storms happened pretty often back then.

I grew up at or at least spent a good chunk of my childhood in Andalusia. We weren’t that far from the Delaware River, Maybe a half a mile by air. On these types of foggy, rainy nights in the winter, I remember a time or two of hearing boats blowing their fog horns. At least that’s what Pop Pop told me it was. They were pretty loud and had the strangest echoes on certain types of nights.

I guess this evening really seems and feels like one of those nights when I might have the bedroom window open. Our bedroom was too hot. You see, our radiator was the first one out of the oil furnace, so it had the hottest water. The only time that as nice was on the rare occasion that I got sick. I’d lean back against it, and it would make me feel so good.

We’d see barges once in a while on the river when we were out at Neshaminy State Park walking the trails or fishing at the marina. We did that very regularly when we weren’t at the mountains, at least when I was young.

Another thing I remember from that time is my dad had a radio. It got some shortwave stuff along with the normal AM and FM. I spent many nights just spinning through the shortwave bands. The whole thing was so interesting to me.
