Light Deadlifts Felt Pretty Good

I was up late last night watching the Phillies game. It was tough to watch since they played poorly, and the sound on the NBC sports app that I had to watch it on was just terrible. The crowd was far too loud and drowned everything else out. Needless to say, I was up pretty late and got to bed late. I slept well enough when I did sleep, but it was far too short of a sleep.

Needless to say, I was tired when I woke up. I got up to take my thyroid pills but wasn’t able to fall back to sleep, so I eventually got up and drank my coffee. It was good and helped me relax a bit while I got caught up on Hacker News and stuff.

I was anxious to get at my deadlifts as early as reasonable this morning once I decided to do them. I wanted to get them while I was not too tired, plus the Phillies had a daytime game. It was about 8:30 a.m. or so when the mail came. I heard the barrel guys too, so that was as good a time as any to head into the garage.

I took my time with the lighter sets to see how my quad felt. It felt just a little weak this morning. It felt great on the lighter deadlifts and only felt better as the weight increased. I felt like I was moving well, too. Sadly, I didn’t record any videos to look at and check my technique this time. I knew I wasn’t going to be really pushing myself. The last set I had today was the five plus AMRAP which called for the lifts to be at a light two hundred and forty-five pounds. I stopped at five, but I had more in the tank, for sure. I am thinking next week I will push the reps a little more, as long as things feel fine.

While I was breaking down the bar and putting the plates away, I figured I would get a shift workout in too. I wanted something pretty simple and quick, so I went with today’s shift version. I did regular dumbbell squats instead of goblet squats and kept the weight fairly light. It’s just quicker to clean the dumbbells to the shoulder that than set up for the goblet squats. My goal, more than anything else, was to do something and move. I wanted to get some squats in to stretch my quads and use them. The WOD was pretty uneventful, but it got my heart rate higher than I thought it would. I didn’t take the lack of sleep into consideration, I guess. It turned out to be a pretty good workout.

It was a successful day for me in the garage gym again. What makes it even better is the fact that I was feeling so tired and didn’t want to do anything. These are the days that make me better. The times when it’s tougher to just get the gumption to do my lifting and WOD are where the real improvements come. When it’s easy, it’s just fun.
