Squats Felt Super Heavy This Morning
Last night, I slept really well. I was just up later than usual, then woke up a little after four o’clock, so I guess I didn’t have enough sleep. I hate it when my brain just wakes up. My resting heart rate has gotten down into the middle again consistently, and it’s not even warmed up yet. I just didn’t feel all that refreshed when I got up.
I drank my coffee this morning and read Hacker News while enjoying the morning cup of Joe. It tasted great. Even though I was feeling tired, I knew I wanted to get my back squats in early this morning. I wanted to watch the Phillies game later on.
It was about mid-morning or so when I got the idea to get changed and head out into the home gym to work on my squats. I wasn’t feeling it, but I also knew it was light after resetting my weights.
The first thing that I noticed when I unracked the bar was that even that empty bar felt heavy. My body and hips felt a bit tighter than normal too, but I was moving well. I took my time working my way through those lower weights and was enjoying the lifting even though it didn’t feel great.
The working sets felt super heavy for the weight but felt doable. The set of five, at two hundred and fifteen pounds, felt a lot heavier. I rounded up five pounds for that set for simplicity and to avoid getting involved with fractional plates, but it was feeling like it was closer to two hundred and fifty pounds.
The final set was at two hundred and forty pounds; thankfully, it was a very manageable weight that I knew I could do any day. When I first got under that bar, I thought, based on how it felt, that there was no way in hell I’d even get five reps in. Of course, I did, and I just chugged away at it and got eight or nine reps. I recorded eight, but my watch counted nine. As much as the weight felt super heavy this morning, the squats felt great and put me in a good mood when I was finished.
I relaxed for a short while but didn’t want to wait too long before I got a WOD in since I was likely to just skip it if I waited too long. I hunted down a simple one. While searching, I found one that was an old shift that was just lungesters and single unders. That fit what I wanted to do. I thought the lunges would stretch my hips a bit, and they did. This version was unweighted, but that only allowed me to move a little faster. It got my heart rate up pretty well, but not as much as some other workouts have done.
It was a pretty good day for me to feel as tired as I did. Maybe I will take a little nap before the Phillies game. That’s unlikely to happen, since I just can’t typically nap.
