Fifties In A WOD For A Change

I slept good last night. I woke up at about 3 and had to go to the bathroom, but then I was able to fall back to sleep. That’s a rarity. Normally, if I wake up that late, my brain thinks it is time to start the day. Much to my surprise, I ended up waking around 7:00 this morning. I rarely sleep that late! There was some light coming in the windows around the shades. When there’s light out when I get up, I always feel like I am sleeping the day away.

I got up and was drinking my coffee when I noticed my wrist near my thumb was feeling a lot better. The cyst I had there came back a little while ago, and the past week it’s been really hurting. Playing with the kids last night with them hanging on my arms made it pop again. I felt it. I knew it. It made my whole wrist feel more inflamed, but I knew it would get better eventually. There’s some residual soreness this morning, but it does feel a lot better. Now there’s just a soft spot where the large, hard lump had been.

I have been wanting to use the heavier dumbbells in a WOD for a little while now. Due to my wrist and just wanting to go faster, I have been mostly using the lighter ones. I remembered an older ladder type of EMOM with front squats and jerks. That’s the ideal type of workout to be a little more aggressive with the weight. I knew I would be less willing to push to failure with the reps today, and that wasn’t my goal. I was hoping to get five or six rounds. On a positive note, I wound up stopping at seven! I had plenty of time to keep going, but I knew my breath wasn’t going to recover enough for the next minute, so I stopped there on a good note.

The larger dumbbells were feeling a bit clunky for me today. Both the heads and handles are larger, so they don’t sit where I am used to them sitting, so it feels off. That’s one of the biggest reasons I like to throw in workouts using them every so often. It’s just fun to mix things up here and there.
