Front Squats This Morning Were Fucking Hard

Every so often, you know a day of lifting will be a bit on the tough side, and today was certainly exactly like that for me. There will be days like this at times. My legs still feel somewhat dead after the very heavy front squats the other day and heavy kettle bell swings. My lats are pissed from the strict pull-ups in a WOD yesterday, so I knew today would be a challenge.

The front squats today were interesting for sure. I was supposed to do three sets of five at 240 pounds. I knew this was very heavy for me. On a good day, I think I’d be good for it, but today wasn’t one. I did make the first set of five to give myself a new five rep max, and I’m thrilled with that. They were certainly a fight, but it was fucking heavy weight for me. 15 pounds over my old Crossfit gym one rep max. They felt good, just very heavy. They looked surprisingly good. I have no complaints at all.

The last rep I completed was really tough. I hit and nearly paused at the sticking point, but I was able to push my knees forward and out and hips under the bar to keep it moving. It was a very grindy rep, but I didn’t break too badly. My upper back was beginning to round on that last rep, but not my lower back. It was very heavy, though, and you have got to begin to fail someplace and somehow. I took completing my first set of five today as a massive win and walked away. It’s like that old song where the gambler says you have to know when to hold them and know when to fold them. I don’t typically like country music, but that’s one song that I do like.

Next up, I had my bench press at 155 pounds. I did my three sets of five at the working weight with no issues at all, but it’s only rather moderate weight for me.

I passed on the good mornings today. Between my legs being even more dead and my lats being angry, I figured there was too much risk involved in considering the good mornings.

A half hour or so after doing my strength, I decided to tackle yesterday’s WOD. It was one that I didn’t think I’d do too well at because hop overs just aren’t my thing. I can improve many things, but the fact that I’m visually impaired isn’t one of them. That makes hopping over an object an exercise in frustration at times, and today was a day like that.

Given everything, it was going to be a just get some movement for the day in sort of WOD. The hop overs were slow and not fun, but the sandbag hang clusters felt great. On the sandbag movement, I really made up time that I lost hopping over the sandbag. In the end, I completed the WOD with a score in the range for the goal, so that’s a good feeling.

Music for the strength and WOD was Atheist

After I did my lifts, we got the shed cleaned out. Something we’ve been wanting to do for quite a while. We had some things that were a pain to get rid of in there. I figured out we could take the propane tanks that we weren’t going to use to the Lancaster hazardous waste facility along with the old UPS battery. Other than it taking time to drive the stuff there, it’s a completely painless process at least, and we can be reasonably sure that that stuff should be disposed of safely.

Time got away from us before we could do our bro shit, so we decided to leave that for tomorrow.

We headed off to Joy’s for supper and some slushies. Their food really has been consistently great for us at least since the pandemic started, including all the times we brought it home for takeout. Of course, it’s better when you eat it there in person, but it’s all about reasonable expectations.
