Got My Squats And A WOD in Today

We went to Joy’s last, not as we usually do, so we had some drinks. That was a factor in my not sleeping well last night. The Phillies didn’t start until eight o’clock, so that was a later game than we’re used to. It was a great game, and really one that kept me glued to the TV watching it. As much fun as it is to watch a blowout like Wednesday, close games like the one last night are much more enthralling. The Phillies won, and it was great to see it. Now we have to wait until next week, since that’s when they play the Diamondbacks. The excitement of that game kept me awake for a good while.

I woke up this morning feeling surprisingly well rested and enjoyed my coffee while watching the Philly Captain’s video from the game. I’d put off my squats until today, so Molly was home to watch, so I wanted to get them done earlier rather than later.

I heard hammering at the neighbor’s house, so I knew I wouldn’t be the bad guy making noise, so I headed out into the home gym a little before 8:00 this morning. The light sets really felt great for me today. My ankle had given out on me a few times earlier this week, so I thought maybe that would bug me, but it was fine. I did take my good old-time, working my way up in the weights and just feeling good and enjoying the lifts.

My final set was a pretty heavy two hundred and seventy-five pounds. It had to do the five plus AMRAP at that weight. These bigger sets are the toughest for me to get a feel for how much I can get out of them. The first two reps felt light and were super explosive. The third one was a bit of a grind, where I broke a little bit and my weight shifted forward a bit too much. My timing was just off on that rep, so I continued on. The fourth was very explosive again. The fifth one was a bit of a grind, but in a good way. I didn’t break at all. I knew that it was my last rep for the day. Judging by how they felt, I think I would have had more in the tank if I hadn’t burned so much energy on the third one. To say the least, I was really pleased with how it went. I figured this weigh0t was probably up near my five rep max. When I looked it up afterward, my five rep max was two hundred and eight pounds from earlier this year.

Music for the squats was Alkaloid

We got our grocery shopping and the bullshit that goes along with it done later this morning. I have to say that was painful. People were just in the way all over the place. Giant had half the aisles blocked up by boxes, with not an employee in sight. It needed to be done, or we wouldn’t have anything to eat.

Shortly after we got home, I decided I wanted to get a WOD in for the day. I went with a shift from earlier in the week that just had farmer’s carries, push presses and burpees in it. My legs still felt dead, so I didn’t know how I was going to get it done, but I did. I went lighter and used only the twenty-five pound dumbbells, but that seemed to be the right choice for this day. I just wanted to move and hopefully move fast, and I accomplished that to a point. At one point during the WOD I got a stone to jam the damn pointed side between my knee cap and bone, and that wasn’t fun. I slowed down the burpees a little after that and stepped back instead of jumping back so that I’d at least have some control if my knee found another stone in the grass. I did keep the presses to strict presses because the weight was light.

All in all, today was a good day for me. The weather was so nice with full sunshine and the temperature in the middle sixties when we did our WOD that it felt great to get some vitamin D while we worked out. It was even better that we did the WOD together. We haven’t done that in a while. I do love when we get to do a workout together! We need to do it more often.
