Used 50s For A WOD This Morning

I slept good last night. Really good. I did not wake up at 3:00 AM like yesterday so that felt good.

When I woke up this morning, it was not too bad temperature wise. It was in the mid-sixties with the dew point in the low sixties, so it felt fantastic in here with the windows open. Perfect would have been in the 50s, but this was much better than many of the recent days.

While I browsed the web on my computer, I enjoyed sipping my coffee. After looking at the news and stuff, I started looking at WODs. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do for a WOD today. The one programmed for the day was pretty grippy so with the forecast being for another hot day I wanted to avoid that, so I don’t have to be concerned about the kettlebell slipping.

I noticed yesterdays which I hadn’t done was low reps of presses and push presses. I thought about it and concluded that it was the perfect opportunity to try out the fifty pound dumbbells in a WOD with presses. Mentally I was a bit intimidated with the heavier weights since it’s the first time I have used them in a WOD setting other than the snatch one a little while back, but it felt manageable.

The sets of four presses were all unbroken and the push presses were all unbroken except the fourth and last round. The lunges were what actually slowed me down today. I am not super comfortable doing them while having the dumbbells racked. With the way, I was pouring sweat, I took the steps a little slower, so I didn’t unexpectedly slip with that hundred pounds sitting on my shoulders. I normally like to use the sandbag for weighted lunges because I feel that’s the safest to fail if I were to slip or step wrong.

It felt good to push out of my normal comfort zone with the heavier weight. No, I did not meet or even come close to the goal for the WOD, but wasn’t what today was about. It was about testing myself with the fifty pounds and seeing if I could make it through. The answer was a definite yes. I learned that I should consider using heavier weights for some WODs at least. With some time, the confidence to do these movements heavier with some speed will come. It’s a process. I’ve been at this long enough to know that when I bump the weight, I tend to be slower and overly cautious. That’s why I have been injury free n the nearly ten years at this stuff. I definitely don’t push myself quite enough with upping weights here at home. Back in the gym, I was usually trying to keep up with guys (or girls) half my age or chasing the RX or RX+.
